This page on the website has spawned from two major events. First, being gifted several boxes of historical information about Tiviot Dale and second, the sad event of closing three churches within our Circuit. Thankfully we have received several boxes of historical information about these churches as well. We are busy cataloguing all these boxes to get ready to send to Stockport Archives.
For everyone to have access to our history, the items need to be catalogued and sent to the Stockport Archives in Central Library. When I visited the archives last year; they were not sure which Methodist/URC churches belonged in our Circuit over time. We told them we would sort this out!
In one box from St John's Methodist Church, we found several Circuit plans going back to the mid-19th century. Sarah Rose, the Community and Family worker from Heaton Mersey (who also happens to have a degree in History and a postgraduate in teaching History. As well as having a grandfather who had a very keen interest in Stockport History.) was roped into a side project of documenting all the churches in our Circuit from the plans provided to give to Stockport Archives for cataloguing purposes.
Her document can be found here. She has also highlighted some extra information of interest.
History of churches is not entirely made up of musty old documents about deeds, insurance, plans, and financial accounts. Although important, the history we want to document is people's experiences and stories about their church. If you have a story to tell about your experience in any of our churches, past or present, we would love to hear from you.
Over time, this page will develop as we document the interesting things we find and hear about. If you are interested in history and archiving, please let me know. And please don't forget to send in your stories! Watch this space...
